I have not formally studied sound. Is prior experience in sound a requirement for admission?

It is not a requirement to have formally studied sound specifically. ReSound is open to both European and non-European students who hold a bachelor’s degree in sound, music, film, or media studies.

How many examples of work are required?

We’re looking for a maximum of three examples of sound related works. So, if you have 30 pieces, pick the top three that you think will make the most impact. Focus on contrast rather than have three of the same sort of style.

Can you provide more detail about these examples?

We’re being quite broad in the sense that they can be maybe audio recordings or audio related outputs or they could be video related outputs and there could be songs, music, soundtracks, arts and Electro acoustic music performance (for example).

What format should I use?

They should be submitted as:

  • Audio files or video files, or perhaps a portfolio website where you submit a link and in that portfolio website you include these materials.
  • You should also include a short paragraph on each of the piece is explaining your motivations behind it and the provenance, like what did you do within the piece and what were you hoping to achieve and what do you think you could like to improve upon it?

What duration of material should I include?

10 – 15 minutes in total.

If I do not already have a suitable portfolio of work can I create one specifically for this programme?

Yes. Absolutely and if you do not have time to do so before the deadline this year you might consider working towards applying again in subsequent years.

Could the final project be a combination of audiovisual art, for example, documentary installation with sound design?

Yes. It can be varied, and depends on you and your interests and your experiences.

Could I collaborate with other EMJMD students for my final project?

Yes but it would depend on a number of factors – firstly the alignment of your timelines. It could be a great collaboration if we could get the right project and the right people involved.

There is a lot of potential in this.

What kind of job opportunities do you envisage for graduates?

We will only know where our graduates end up as a result of them finishing the programme. We would see them being employable in a number of audio and sound related fields, whether that is in audio post production, film post production, video games, art, sound and sound art media related disciplines, research related disciplines, perhaps even health related disciplines as well. We will only really start seeing that as a result of our students pushing out into the world. Because this is a unique programme, you’re going to be in a class with students from all over the world who have all different experiences of what sound is like in their countries and they’re going to be bringing in wonderful experiences as well. And we’re going to hopefully have a wonderful mix of skills and ideas and you never know where this programme could bring you. Perhaps even further study as a PhD as well. That could be something we would see as well for further research beyond this.
